Sanitation Professionals Awarded

Nepal Engineering College (nec) awarded course completion certificate to 15 successful trainees of the PLCS (Professional Learning Course in Sanitation) first batch training program, held in collaboration with IHE Delft Institute for Water Education supported by the GSGS project of the Gates Foundation.

The Principal of nec, Prof. Dr. Hari Krishna Shrestha and the Director of the Student Welfare Division Prof. Dr. Bim Shrestha distributed the certificate amid a program held in Kathmandu. The Global Sanitation Graduate School (GSGS) project intends to develop a pool of trained human resources around the globe through master level programs in sanitation and professional training to the technical persons involved in this field.

Currently 50 universities in different countries have joined hands to implement the activities under this project. Kathmandu University, under the central coordination of Prof. Dr. Bim Shrestha is leading the GSGS program implementation in Nepal. The other Nepalese project partners are Nepal Engineering College, Pokhara University, and Purbanchal Campus, Tribhuvan University. Out of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals adopted by the UN General Assembly in 2015 the Clean Water and Sanitation is under the SDG 6. The successful trainees expressed their commitment to do their best and contribute in the accomplishment of the SDG 6. The training is the first in a series of three training programs to be organized by nec; a total of 60 sanitation professionals are expected to complete the training within the project duration. Prof. Sabitri Tripathy, Er. Ramesh Khanal, Er. Bibhuti Ojha, Er. Binay Shakya and Er. Sushil Giri were among the trainers from nec; Dr. Nawaraj Khatiwada and Er. Suman Dhun Shrestha contributed as resource persons from KU side.

The basic curriculum of the training was developed by an international team through a series of interactions, and is currently being implemented in several countries; as such the certificate is expected to be recognized internationally.
